Autumn Fires
Autumn Fires, acrylic and oil on canvas, 2018.
Using a combination of oil and acrylic paints I built up and broke down the surface of each canvas over the three-month residency. Layers were laid down and scraped back, painted over and uncovered again, until bright colors and complex naturalistic patterns emerge from each canvas.
The reds and oranges spread across the cool blue ground the way autumn fires move through a field, flaring up in some places and dying back in others. Some marks rise to the surface. Others stay buried, half consumed beneath the layers that came after.
The fine details of this Triptych pull you closer to inspect and discover the mysteries hidden beneath the surface. The longer you look, the more there is to find.
